When people have the opportunity to be involved in the development of these homes and communities, they tend to be much happier and healthier.

Independent living means having control over your life and your activities. It is possible to decide when to participate in social activities and when you do them, where you can do them and how you intend to perform them. Independent living can also mean deciding when and just how much you eat and when you sleep. It is possible to decide which activities you would like to perform. Independent living may also mean developing a schedule of activities that you want to do and how you want to do them.

Participating in social activities may require planning. How far can you drive to go shopping? Just how many steps would you try get a loaf of bread? How long would it take to eat that loaf? The solution to these questions may necessitate a great deal of planning and effort.

In addition, planning is necessary for health. The activities that you plan to do may involve many different physical activities, mental activities or both. To become mentally healthy, you must do some thinking, particularly active thinking, and to do some creative things, such as painting or writing. Planning can take place in leisure time or it may take place while at work.

Living independently isn’t easy. There may be occasions when you feel like giving up. However, despite these times, you ought not give up as you cannot cope. It requires determination and discipline to call home an independent lifestyle. As you practice staying balanced between your work and your activities, you will eventually find yourself enjoying your life.
